Type Locality and Naming

Along the Karyatag River, southern slope of the Gissar ridge. S.K. Ovchinnikov in 1941 (382, p. 73). Stratotype on the watershed of the Karatag-Shirkent and Shirkent-Obizarang rivers.

Synonym: Karatag Suite, Каратаская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Basaltic lavas and tuffs with rare horizons and lenses of limestones and jaspers. Thickness 800-1200 m.

Contacts with underlying formations are not established

Upper contact

In the territory of Tajikistan, it is overlain by the Suffin-Carb Fm. Along Z.A. Yudalevich, F.K. Divaev, and others, it is overlain with apparent conformity by the Sagdor Fm.

Regional extent

South slope of the Gissar Range.

Fossils

In limestones, at the top of the suite - Serpukhovian Goniatites - Stenoglaphyrites sp., Cravenoceras sp.; conodonts - Gnathodus bilineatus bilineatus (Roun.), G. bilineatus bollandensis Hig. et Bouck., Paragnathodus commutatus Bran. et Mehl.; late Visean-Serpukhovian sea lilies - Arenariocrinus arenarius Yelt. et Schew., Pentagonocyclicus djyjykrutus Schew. and others.


Age 

It is an age equivalent of the Vakhshvar Fm. S.K. Ovchinnikov attributed the suite to the Middle Carboniferous; O.N. Nikitina and others (1993) - to the Lower-Middle Carboniferous; in the Stratigraphic Lexicon (439) - to the Middle Visean (?) Serpukhovian stage; in the monograph (165) and on the State Geological Map-500 of Uzbekistan (460) - to the Early Carboniferous Late Visean-Serpukhovian age.
